Theodor Herzl was certainly not the first Jew to dream of Zion, but he nevertheless put the wheels in motion (Zionism 1). The Jewish state was the product of many complex historic forces, including two World Wars and the efforts of Herzl's many followers, it was he who organized the political force that was able to take advantage of the political influences necessary to the creation of the Jewish state.
