With every relationship comes struggle, especially when relationships over lap. Overlapping relationships cause a man to choose or be chosen based upon pride or loyalty. The difference between a lord and a vassal is nobility. A lord is noble through birth which is to mean that they are more civilized. However, in this case Bernier is more civilized than Raoul because of his character not his birth rite. The pride that Raoul exhibits would never allow him to see that. Therefore the dilemma remains where one’s loyalty should exist: with friend or family.
