Causes of the Civil War.
The five main causes of the Civil War were the formation of the Confederate States of America, sectionalism, the secession of the Southern states, the Kansas-Nebraska Act, and the Missouri Compromise of 1820. At the time, many events angered both the North and the South. Those causes were the most influential, and had the largest impact on the progression of pre-war hostility.

The Missouri Compromise of 1820 was also a key basis of the Civil War. It established the 36°, 30' line. This line maintained the balance of free to slave states. In Congress, the ratio of free to slave states was kept. This situation left the issue of slavery unresolved. The Missouri Compromise only provided a way around present problems, and laid the groundwork for a large dilemma later, when it was declared unconstitutional.
