Nora lies about eating the macaroons and more importantly about the forgery. Gerardo lies to Paulina about already accepting his position in the government. These relationships are not solid because of the husband's betrayal of their wives. This results in a progressive deterioration of the relationships to the extent that, for example, Nora eventually leaves Torvald.
