Orwell’s experience of writing “Down and out in Paris and London”, in which he integrated himself with the proletariat of the day, gave him a healthy respect for the working class. It was then that he gained his strong support for democratic socialism. This shines through in the book with the proletariat representing the world of 1984’s only hope of happiness.
