People sometimes don’t hear the whole truth about things that the government is doing. George Orwell’s novel 1984 is a futuristic book about how the government of Oceania controls its citizens. Orwell uses irony to highlight the theme of Appearance vs. Reality in his novel. He does this by describing the names of the ministries, the detrimental things the government does, and how the characters act completely opposite of how they really are.

The theme Appearance vs. Reality is showed by Orwell through the use of irony. Both the government and the characters do things to deceive other people. It all appears to be one way, but in reality, it’s the complete opposite.
